Those magnificent men in their flying machines…

As the continual quest to engage our students continues, the senior boys have begun earning their wings!
On Friday, we invited Mr Pears to school so that he could share his experiences of flying his plane.
All eyes were on Mr Pears as he explained how to operate and fly a model aircraft!
After this lesson we headed up to the classroom to work on constructing our own model planes. The senior boys have recently
been supplied with “Delta Darts” at no cost from the Model Aeroplane Association of Queensland.
Balsa wood, pins, superglue and Stanley knives were swiftly moving as the students constructed their own aircraft.
This simple activity combined the skills of reading, comprehending, fine motor skills, working together and problem solving.
A special thanks to Mr Pears who gave up his own time to visit the students. We certainly appreciated it and look forward to
showing the final results of our building and flying skills.

These rubber powered models were provided free to the Bollon State School as part of an educational program
run by the MAAQ.
All that is required to assemble is a cutting knife, pins, fast drying glue and a building board such as a stiff piece of
cardboard.
Once built they can be flown indoors or out doors if the conditions are calm.
They are provided to schools and other organizations where children can be taught in small groups.
In conjunction with the building of these models students are taught the fundamentals of flight from the drawings
of Leonardo da Vinci to present day aircraft.
Each State has an Education officer who's task it is to over see the running of these programs.
Any clubs wishing to participate should contact the State Secretary for advice as to who to contact.
Many thousands of young people have been introduced to the sport of Aero Modeling over the years with the
construction and flying of these small Model Aircraft, not only in Australia, but in other countries too.
The kits are supplied by Aero Modeling Association of America to the MAAA for distribution to all States.
A booklet used as a teaching aid can be down loaded from this Web Site by going to the Club Help page.
